Students may pursue either a B.A. or B.S. degree in Theatre at Illinois State University, with a wide range of concentrations. Our goal is to provide comprehensive and in-depth educational opportunities to undergraduate students, both in the classroom and in our production program.Theatre majors choose a specialized sequence in Acting, Dance, Design/Production, or Theatre Education. They can also opt to take the more broadly-based Theatre Studies sequence that features a nine-hour concentration in any of these areas: Cinema Studies, Directing, Theatre History, Theatre Management, Creative Drama, or Microcomputer Applications. The Performance Sequence (Acting or Dance) requires an audition for admittance. The Design/Production Sequence requires a Portfolio Review and/or Interview for admittance. The Theatre Education and Theatre Studies Sequences require only admittance to Illinois State University. For School of Theatre guidelines, visit Audition, Portfolio Review, & Scholarship Interview Guidelines. Some students find double majors to be an an effective way of extending their preparation for future professional careers. The School of Theatre works with other departments to facilitate such interests. The School of Music administers a Music Theatre major designed for students who wish to incorporate courses and production work in music, dance and theatre. Theatre majors in all sequences take a broad-based core of classes and are encouraged to explore many aspects of this rich and varied art form. The School of Theatre firmly believes that well-rounded and well-educated theatre students not only become more creative artists but increase substantially their chances for success in the professional world. Illinois State students may also declare a minor in theatre, dance, cinema studies, theatre education, or dance education. The Illinois State University School of Theatre is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association. |
