Employment (teaching): Professor and Chairman of the Art Department, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1980-84; Visiting Associate Professor of Art, University of Southern California, 1978-80; Associate Professor of Art, California State University, Northridge, 1969-78; Visiting Artist, University of California, Berkeley, 1972; Instructor of Art, University of Texas Austin, 1966-69.

Employment (other): Art Critic, Newsweek Magazine 1989 to present.

Fellowships: National Endowment for the Arts (Painting), 1985, 1977; National Endowment for the Arts (Art Criticism), 1973; and John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (Painting), 1972.
