Sue Hettmansperger, b. 1948
Statement: "I have a background of involvement with environmental and
ecological issues dating from the late 1960's. This interest has become a
passion that I foresee continuing throughout my life. Growing up in New Mexico
affected me very powerfully with a sense of connectedness to the land and
responsibility for its continued natuarl state. My history has led me to
the study of diversity in nature.
Plant morphology and surface theory is thus a current theme in my work. I
emphasize underlying connections between structures in nature for their honed
elegance, beauty and interrelatedness. May paintings offer disquieting hybridized
forms in a shifting perspectival space. They are a celebration of diversity
and wonder, while brooding on the limitations of our knowledge systems. Through
them, we can be made more consciously aware of our cultural perspective and
interpretation of experience. Our troubled cultural relationship with nature
is to me the most pressing issue of our time. My goal is to work toward the
change of a more sustainable relationship of humans to their environment
in the future."--Sue Hettmansperger
