Middle Core General Education courses

IDS 121.37, Text and Context: Theatre and Film: Exploration of the Black Identity in America
July 17 - August 11, 9am-11:50am, MTWR
The course will explore the formation and evolution of the black identity.  Ultimately, the course will present a topical study of race, gender, and class – the central battlegrounds on which questions of racial identity and national belonging have been waged.  We will examine race and representation, the idea of “the other,” and various perspectives on identity.  This course will primarily examine plays and films but will also reference articles, poems, artwork, and music in order to unpack the series of myths Whites and Blacks have told about themselves, each other, and American culture.

IDS 121.39, Text and Context: Women X Women
May 22 - June 16, 9am-11:50am, MTWR
Women X Women will examine the relationships between women: mothers and daughters, sisters, lovers, strangers, and friends.  Our texts will be plays by contemporary women playwrights. We will explore the feminine voice, the representation of women in advertising/theatre/television/film, and current women's issues.

IDS 121.03, Text and Context: Music
June 12-July 21,  MTWRF 1:25-2:45
This course will examine the various types of musical languages ranging from literal texts to abstract sound.   Similarly, the various factors of context will be explored as a method of further comprehending meaning within musical texts.

Critical examination of musical source materials, survey of research practices in music and practice in writing about music.

MUSIC 471, Measuring and Evaluating Music Behavior

Study of measurement theory, standardized tests, test construction and interpretation. Measurement of music aptitude, achievement, performance, aesthetic response, preference, appreciation.

THEATRE 101, Oral Interpretation

The individual performance of non-dramatic literature as an approach to the study of literature and performance.

THEATRE 228, Special Topics in Dance
July 17 - August 3, MTWR, 5:30pm-9:20pm
Intermediate/Advanced level technique classes offered based in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz, followed by conditioning taught daily by nationally renown faculty. A creative lab/ improvisation/ repertory will follow technique class each day in which students will be directed in choreography and compositional work. Distinguished faculty will rotate throughout the three-week summer school session offering unique expertise to the class.

THEATRE 237, Stage Make-up
June 19 - July 13, 1:00pm-1:50pm MWTR; lab 2:00pm-3:50pm
Introduction to make-up technique through lecture-demonstration and laboratory practice. Development of ability in corrective and prosthetic make-up for characterization.
