The Music Therapy Sequence prepares students for a career in music therapy by providing academic content and clinical experiences related to competencies outlined by the American Music Therapy Association. Students who complete this degree are eligible to take the Certification Board for Music Therapists, Inc. exam. The music therapist is simultaneously a musician and a therapist who provides an accepting, non-threatening environment in which individuals participate in music for the purpose of physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual growth. Music therapists are hired under job titles such as music therapist, activity therapist, and creative or expressive arts therapist to work with individuals who have developmental disabilities, sensory impairments, dementia, and mental health or other medical problems. Institutions hiring music therapists include schools, hospitals, prisons and nursing homes. Music therapists may also set up their own private practice. Illinois State University is one of approximately 72 schools in the United States, and one of two schools in Illinois, that offers an undergraduate music therapy program. The Bachelor of Music Degree (Music Therapy Sequence) at Illinois State University requires 50 hours of music (including music theory, music history, applied music study, conducting, performing organizations, and group instruments), and 21 hours of music therapy (including a six-month music therapy internship). Students also take general education and psychology courses. At Illinois State University, students may begin music therapy coursework in the first semester of the Freshman year. This allows for exploration of music therapy as a career option early in college life. In addition, it allows for immediate bonding and support from other music therapy majors, and for personal contact and direction from music therapy faculty. Clinical experience throughout the Junior and Senior years provides students with hands-on experience in community facilities under the direction of qualified personnel. In addition, there are opportunities for independent projects, exposure to computer applications, and research. For more information, please contact: Cindy Ropp - Director of Music Therapy |
