The Master of Music Degree (Music Therapy Sequence) is designed to produce highly qualified and knowledgeable music therapists who have advanced training in music and its therapeutic applications. Illinois State University is one of about 27 graduate music therapy programs in the United States, and the only graduate music therapy program in the state of Illinois.Specifically, the study of music therapy at the graduate level is expected to qualify individuals for supervisory or coordinator positions in arts therapies, to qualify individuals for entry-level college or university positions in music therapy, and to prepare individuals to produce and disseminate scholarly work in music therapy through presentation or publication. Students are expected to continue their development as musicians while simultaneously increasing their therapeutic knowledge and skills. The graduate curriculum in music therapy accomplishes its purpose by providing advanced study in music, the behavioral sciences, music therapy theory and application, and research methodology. Students without an undergraduate degree in music therapy can complete undergraduate deficiency courses in music therapy as a graduate student-at-large or as a degree candidate while simultaneously pursuing the Masters Degree. The student enters the program as a graduate student-at-large or as a degree candidate depending on the desired outcomes of study. The current Plan of Study for the Master of Music Therapy is available for download. |
