Masters of Music Education
While studying current issues in the profession, the student is given the opportunity to develop a specialized area of concentration. Individual programs of study are based on prior work and present needs and can be structured through advising. This degree also has a part-time and summer-only plan of study.
One of the most attractive features of the program is the variety of options available to the student for their exit thesis or project. Students may elect to complete any one of the following:
- A traditional thesis on an approved music education topic (total 34 hrs)
- A project in an approved music education area of interest (total 32 hrs)
- Four additional elective hours with no thesis requirement (total 34 hrs)
All of the following are required for admission to the program:
- An undergraduate degree in music education or equivalent
- A copy of teacher's certification or a written evidence of teaching ability and projected date for completion of certification
- An on-campus or telephone interview with music education faculty
Entrance Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 for the last 60 hrs. of enrollment.
- Submission of placement credential file or three professional letters of recommendation
- Present a live performance audition (taped auditions may be submitted for provisional admission) or video tape of classroom teaching.
- Entrance examinations in theory and music history/literature must be taken before the first semester of enrollment.
Note: The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admission.
