Opera & Musical Theatre
The Illinois State University School of Music presents a fully-staged opera, operetta, or musical every year in conjunction with our School of Theatre.
Any Illinois State student, who is not in his or her first semester, can audition for a role in an opera or musical theatre production. Auditions occur in August and January prior to school beginning. Audition sign-up sheets are available on the School of Theatre call board here on campus.
Operas presented at Illinois State in recent years are The Mikado, The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Dido and Aeneas, The Elixir of Love, and others. Recent musicals include: Company, Working, Guys and Dolls, Sweeney Todd, Three Penny Opera, South Pacific, and The Secret Garden.

Opera Practicum
(MUS 165, 265, 365)
Opera Practicum presents scenes and excerpts taken from the vast repertoire of opera and Broadway. Opera Practicum is offered every semester (except for the semester of the main stage opera production at Illinois State). The purpose of the class is to learn and stage operatic and Broadway scenes. Occasionally, a complete one-act opera is performed in Opera Practicum. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and is currently offered for one university credit. The class is open to all Illinois State students.
