Bands

The Illinois State University Bands Area has a long standing tradition of excellence in the classroom, in the performance hall, and on the field.  Students from every walk of life participate in the concert, jazz, and athletic ensembles.

Wind Symphony

The Wind Symphony is a select group of the finest instrumentalists at Illinois State University, performing representative works from the wind band literature. In addition to campus programs, the Wind Symphony tours annually. The Wind Symphony has been a featured performing ensemble at the American Bandmasters Association Convention, the Illinois Music Educators Association Conference and the College Band Directors National Association National Convention in 1992 and 2001.

Symphonic Winds

The Symphonic Winds is comprised of approximately 70 outstanding wind and percussion players from across campus. They perform quality band literature and outstanding and representative works, presented in two concerts each semester. Symphonic Winds rehearses two times per week during the fall semester. During the spring semester, the Symphonic Winds replaces the rehearsal schedule of the Marching Band, rehearsing from 4:00-5:50 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is comprised of approximately 70 outstanding wind and percussion players from across campus. They perform quality band literature and present two concerts each semester. This organization rehearses two times per week.

Marching Band

The Illinois State University Marching Band, "The Big Red Marching Machine," has a long and proud history of performances at major events at home and across the Midwest . Each year, the marching band performs at all home football games and for an audience of over 10,000 at the State of Illinois Invitational High School Marching Band Championship . The band has performed in events across the United States and is a consistent performer at the Bands of America Marching Band Regional and Grand National Championships.

University Band

The University Band is comprised of non-music majors and music majors gaining experience on a secondary instrument. This ensemble provides students the opportunity to continue playing while devoting the major portion of their time to other academic disciplines. This organization presents one concert at the end of each term.

Pep Band

The Illinois State University Basketball Band provides spirit and enthusiasm at all men's and women's home basketball games as well as various other events on campus and in the community. Membership is open to all students who participate in another band during the academic year.

Jazz Ensemble

For students interested in becoming jazz performers, our jazz ensembles and improvisation courses demand intense study and individual practise from all participants. Learn more about the Jazz Ensembles.
