The String Project

The mission of the Illinois State String Project is to encourage musical instruction at a young age by offering low cost lessons on a string instrument in a group setting.

The Illinois State University School of Music was awarded a $10,000.00 grant from the NEA and administered by the American String Teacher Association for the development of beginning instruction on the violin, viola, cello , or bass. Matching funds for this program have come from the College of Fine Arts and The School of Music at Illinois State University.

No prior musical training is necessary! Lessons consist of group instruction of all instruments led by a Master Teacher who supervises undergraduate music education majors from Illinois State University that assist with the program. This endeavor is designed to bring the joy of music and playing string instruments to young children in a group setting.

  • Beginning instruction for 7-9 year olds on violin, viola, or cello.
  • Low cost, group lessons.
  • String Project students are responsible for renting or purchasing their own instrument (violins rent at @$15 per month)
