Chuck
Smith
Mr. Smith is a founding member of Radio Ensemble Players. He is
also an associate artist at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, an
artist-in-residence at Columbia College Chicago, an associate
producer of Legacy Productions - a Chicago based touring company, and
an artistic associate at the History Theatre in St. Paul, MN.
At the Goodman: he recently directed critically acclaimed
productions of Pearl Cleage's BLUES FOR AN ALABAMA SKY and August
Wilson's MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM; the 1993 to 1995 productions of A
CHRISTMAS CAROL; and VIVISECTIONS FROM A BLOWN MIND.
Elsewhere: Mr. Smith directed THE CONVERSION OF LEO NOVOTNY at
the Piven workshop; THE OTHER CINDERELLA and THE GLASS MENAGERIE at
Chicago Black Ensemble; WAIT UNTIL DARK for the Saint Sebastian
Players; Steve Carter's EDEN at Victory Gardens; STEAL AWAY HOME for
the Chicago Children's Theatre Co.; and THE AMERICAN BOYS , THE LAST
SEASON, and THE TEMPLE at ETA. He also served as director/stage
manager for The Legacy productions of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DEACON
A.L. WILEY and THE MEETING at The History Theatre in St. Paul, MN.
and the Center Stage in Atlanta, which included a February 1993 tour
of southern African-American Colleges with the THE MEETING.
Mr. Smith serves as artistic director of the Chicago Historical
Society's VOICES IN HISTORY Program and is a founding member of the
Chicago Theatre Company where he served as artistic director for four
seasons directing THE MEETING, THAT APPLE SURE DON'T SHINE,
DREAM-MAKER, DRINK THE CONTENTS OF THIS VIAL, SIZWE BANZI IS DEAD,
FATHERS AND OTHER STRANGERS , the Jeff-nominated SUSPENDERS , and the
Jefferson Award winning musical PO' .
