Melanie Manchot’s artwork challenges socially and culturally constructed ideas about beauty, aging, sexuality, and fantasy. This exhibition includes photography and video from three major bodies of work: Liminal Portraits—nude portraits of the artist’s mother set within dramatic landscapes and domestic spaces, The L.A. Pictures—a photo-and-text series of kissing couples which explores notions of intimacy and personal space, and Gestures of Demarcation—self-portraits of Manchot in which figures, often turned away from the camera, pull and tug at the artist’s skin. Organized by Stuart Horodner, Curator at the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, this travelling exhibition is the first survey of the artist’s work to appear in the United States, and is accompanied by a monograph published by Prestel.
