Gabriele Munter: Gabriele Munter: the Years of Expressionism, 1903-1920, a beautiful and rare exhibit I had the pleasure to see, was organized by and opened at the Milwaukee Art Museum in 1998. It traveled to the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, and closed in January of 1999 at the Marion Koagler McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. This exhibit was a must-see for painters, for artists, and historians concerned with the embrace of women artists in the writing and remembering of recent and distant history, and for those particularly interested in the full evaluation of the fertile years at the onset of this century that gave rise to the movement of Expressionism. Gabriele Munter helped to establish the Expressionist style with her varied experiments with painting techniques. She painted still lifes, portraits, and landscapes with bold contour shapes and vibrant colors.
