Required Materials

Each student will be assigned piano music to study during the semester. A minimum of two pieces will be learned and memorized for performance at the final Jury. Each student will be required to purchase music not already in his/her possession; in certain cases it may be possible to work from legal copies (such as CD Sheet Music) or library copies (for out-of-print or inordinately expensive music).

Goals and Objectives

Develop skills as a pianist. This includes ongoing development in technique, fingering, pedaling, level of difficulty, understanding of styles, genres, musical periods, musical expressiveness, performance practice, reading, memorization skills, performing skills, and self-teaching skills. It is my goal as a teacher to give you the skills you need in order to be an independent and self-sufficient pianist. By learning why things are done in certain ways, you will be able to make increasingly informed decisions about piano music.

Course Requirements

  • Attend weekly applied lessons.
  • Attend Piano Area Recitals
  • Attend Faculty or Guest Piano Recitals/Concerts
  • Attend Studio Performance Classes (announced Thursdays at 2:00 PM or other time as agreed upon by all students in the studio)
  • Perform in at least 50% of the Studio Performance Classes
  • Play a final Jury during Finals Week
  • Fulfill Accompanying Requirement (see below)
  • Optional: Perform in Piano Area Recitals (as agreed between student and teacher)
  • Attendance

Attendance is required at weekly lessons, Piano Area Recitals (except in the case of a class conflict), Studio Performance Classes, and Jury.

If you are ill or have a personal emergency, it is very important that you contact me to let me know if you are going to miss a lesson or other activity. I will schedule make-ups whenever possible.

    Grading

Grading is based on attendance, participation, and improvement in lessons, performance classes, and jury.

    Juries

The final jury each semester is an opportunity for you to show what you have learned during the semester, how you have developed as a pianist. The jury will include performance of two pieces, memorized, from different style periods; scales or other technical exercises; and may also include sight-reading.

    Accompanying Requirement

All piano students who are music majors or minors, with piano as their primary instrument, must fulfill an accompanying requirement each semester. Each student must serve as accompanist for at least one instrumentalist or vocalist for the semester, including playing for lessons as requested, performing at area recitals as needed, practicing with the student, and playing for the jury. Pianists should be compensated for this service; the amount of compensation is a personal arrangement between students. An Accompanying Form will be filled out at the beginning of the semester, and signed by the appropriate applied teacher at the end of the semester, as proof of completion of this requirement. Any student who is not at an appropriate level of development to assume accompanying duties may be exempted from this requirement by his/her studio teacher.

    Practicing

All piano students are expected to practice on a consistent basis. For non-majors and music minors, a suggested minimum of one hour practice per day is recommended. For piano principals, a suggested minimum of 1-1/2 to 2 hours practice per day is advised. For piano performance majors, two to four hours practice per day is expected.

Practice rooms are available in Old Union. Grand piano rooms are for your use, though you may use an upright room if you wish. Keys are checked out in the Music Department Office (Centennial East 230). A $15 deposit is required, but this is returned when you turn in the key at the close of your ISU career.

Three practice modules are available in Manchester. These are locked rooms using the same key as Old Union. Students living in Manchester are welcome to use these rooms (upright pianos only).

    Getting in Touch

Please don't feel you have to wait for your weekly lesson to get answers to questions! You're welcome to see me at other times. I'm also very good about checking and answering email (best) and phone messages.
