Required Materials
- The Organ by John Stainer (Schirmer). Available at University Bookstore or from online distributors.
- Organmaster organ shoes. Available at www.organmastershoes.com
- Each student will be assigned organ music to study during the semester. Each student may be required to purchase music not already in his/her possession; in certain cases it may be possible to work from legal copies (such as CD Sheet Music) or library copies (for out-of-print or inordinately expensive music).
Goals and Objectives
Develop skills as an organist. For most students, this means acquiring the skills needed to be a functional church organist. This includes ongoing development in hand/finger technique, pedal technique, fingering, level of difficulty, understanding of styles, genres, musical periods, musical expressiveness, performance practice, reading, performing skills, and self-teaching skills. Additionally, you will learn about organ stops, registration, service music, and hymn playing. It is my goal as a teacher to give you the skills you need in order to be an independent and self-sufficient organist. By learning why things are done in certain ways, you will be able to make increasingly informed decisions about organ music.
Course Requirements
- Attend weekly applied lessons.
- Attend Piano Area Recitals (3 per semester)
- Attend Faculty or Guest Organ Recitals/Concerts
- Attend Studio Performance Classes (announced Thursdays at 2:00 PM or other time as agreed upon)
- Perform in at least 50% of the Studio Performance Classes
- Play a final Jury during Finals Week
Attendance
Attendance is required at weekly lessons, Piano Area Recitals (except in the case of a class conflict), Studio Performance Classes, and Jury.
If you are ill or have a personal emergency, it is very important that you contact me as soon as possible to let me know if you are going to miss a lesson or other activity. I will schedule make-ups when possible.
Grading
Grading is based on attendance, participation, and improvement in lessons, performance classes, and jury.
Juries
The final jury each semester is an opportunity for you to show what you have learned during the semester, how you have developed as an organist. The jury will include performance of repertoire, hymns, and exercises as agreed upon between student and teacher.
Practicing
All organ students are expected to practice on a consistent basis. For non-majors and music minors, a suggested minimum of one hour practice per day is recommended. For more advanced students, a suggested minimum of 1-1/2 to 2 hours practice per day is advised.
The organ practice room is in the basement of Centennial East, Room 11. This is a small pipe organ with 2 manuals and a full AGO pedal board. Keys are checked out in the Music Department Office (Centennial East 230). A $15 deposit is required, but this is returned when you turn in the key at the close of your ISU career.
Getting in Touch
Please don't feel you have to wait for your weekly lesson to get answers to questions! You're welcome to see me at other times. I'm also very good about checking and answering email (best) and phone messages.
