Normal Editions Workshop

Normal Editions Workshop (N.E.W.) is a professional contract and publishing print workshop located adjacent to the printmaking classrooms in the Center for the Visual Arts building.   N.E.W. provides students with opportunities to expand their skills in printmaking through collaborative projects with visiting artists and the production of limited edition prints.

Normal Editions Workshop was founded in September of 1976 in the College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University (I.S.U.), Normal, IL. This workshop continues its role as a distinctive non-profit research facility with a close affiliation with the University and its mission "...to expand knowledge and culture among students, colleagues, and the general citizenry through teaching, research, and service."*   A close rapport remains between the N.E.W. staff and the students, faculty, and administration of the University.

The purposes of Illinois State University's Normal Editions Workshop are outlined as follows:

  1. N.E.W. provides collaborative custom printing services for artists throughout the United States. Artists of regional, national, and international reputation visit I.S.U. and produce original, limited editions. Dennis Oppenheim, Donald Lipski, Kiki Smith, Mark Innerst, John Himmelfarb, David Wojnarowicz, Buzz Spector, Garo Antreasian, Robert Stackhouse, John Fraser, Julia Fish, and Sidney Goodman are among those artists, in addition to some of the art faculty at I.S.U. who have collaborated with the N.E.W. staff to produce editions of prints.
  2. As a result of these services, Illinois State University students within the School of Art have opportunities to work with and to observe visiting practicing artists. Lecture, apprenticeship, and student exchange are part of this program, thus creating a positive and unique atmosphere for students and artists within a professional workshop situation.
  3. Two impressions from each edition printed at N.E.W. become part of the permanent collection at the Illinois State University Galleries. Of these two impressions, one print is designated for archival purposes--i.e. to be housed exclusively in the I.S.U. print collection--and the other print is designated for study collections and possible distribution throughout the state.
  4. Many of these study impressions are organized for traveling exhibitions. Selected publications by N.E.W. have been exhibited and acquired in commercial galleries, institutional museums, and other cultural centers.   Venues include Tweed Art Museum, University of Minnesota, Duluth; Illinois State Museum, Springfield and Lockport; Lakeview Museum, Peoria, IL; Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL; Adler Cultural Center, Chicago; New York Public Library; Laura Mesaros Gallery, West Virginia University, Morgantown; Sordoni Art Gallery, Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, PA; University of Nebraska, Omaha; and The Vatican.
