Graduate Programs in Art

The School of Art at Illinois State University offers graduate programs in the Master of Science, Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts degrees in a number of different areas of specialty.

Master of Fine Arts

The Master of Fine Arts in Art is a 60-hour program that emphasizes both theory and practice in the production, history, and teaching of the visual arts. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate artistic proficiency in at least one of the following disciplines: painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, ceramics, fibers, metalwork and jewelry design, photography, drawing, or glass. Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate an ability to communicate ideas in a written and oral manner.

M.S./M.A. in Art Education

Students seeking a Masters Degree in Art with a sequence in Art Education complete a minimum of 32 hours at the graduate level including:

  • 18 hours of Art Education, including Special Projects and Master's thesis or comprehensive exam.
  • 14 hours in Art or a related area.

M.A. in Visual Culture

The Art History Area of the School of Art is pleased to announce the M.A. in Visual Culture. This is a revision of the former M.A. in Art History. Applications to this new degree sequence are currently being accepted for admission for the Fall 2008 semester.
